H1N1: Separating Fact and Fiction

Pregnancy and H1N1 is a hot topic right now. Among topics being discussed is the lack of information about side effects for the unborn baby and the '70s Swine Flu vaccination attempt that caused Guillian-Barre Syndrome in some adults. Fortunately this was caused by a tainted vaccine supply and vaccines are much safer today but pregnant women are very concerned and still not sure what to do.

Deciding whether or not to vaccinate is up to the individual and although it has been discussed that it will be mandatory, this has not been established yet so it is up to you to be informed. For the most current information, please see the Center for Disease Control (US) and the Public Health Agency (Canada)

How can you protect yourself and your baby during cold and flu season?

  • Wash hands thoroughly with soap and warm water or use alcohol-based hand sanitizer
  • Cough and sneeze in your arm or sleeve, not your hands
  • Keep common surfaces and items clean and disinfected
  • Stay home if sick
  • Seek medical care immediately if you have flu-like symptoms

It's important for pregnant women (and those around them) to follow these guidelines to help reduce exposure.

New Baby Often, not much thought is given to the moments leading up to the arrival of your new baby. Many moms just accept that they will follow the path that most do -- wait for labor, go to the hospital, have their baby, go home after 48 hours. This mental preparation is all some women need or want. They focus on how they will care for a new baby and not as much on the event of the baby's birth... READ MORE
